Lately I've taken up embroidery, mostly to make rugs for my dollhouse. Those are for the most part done with simple tent stitch. Later on I will probably use embroidery more often on doll clothes too so I thought a thread about it could be useful.

Anyway, in the dollhouse thread in the Doll board I had shown a Chinese dragon rug I was working on. I spent an ungodly amount of time on that thing, probably 30 hours or so, before I had completely messed up several rows and couldn't undo it.
The problem was that my linen was very fine and if I had followed the pattern from the book literally I would have ended up with a doormat. So each dot on the pattern became 2x2 dots for me. It was terribly complicated and it's no wonder I finally messed up. Also the linen stretched and deformed in bad ways which made it even harder to count and undoing stitches left very big holes.

In the end I gave up and bought the rougher sort of linen from the craftstore. Instead of two single strands I can now use a whole 6 strand thread.
So I printed the pattern again and started fresh. It was disheartening at first but it also has its good side: My rug only requires about 19,000 stitches now, compared to ~75,000 for the first try! It also looks much smoother already.

On the first pic is the first try on top and the new try at the bottom. They have almost the same size. The new linen is also much sturdier and doesn't stretch in weird ways. Sorry that it's a bit crumpled up - I tried to use an embroidery frame but found it much too unwieldy. It's easier to iron that thing when it's done and it will be stretched and starched anyway.

The second pic shows the project as it looked about two days ago, after maybe 15 hours of work. Embroidery really takes forever...
Right now it reminds me more of an elephant than a dragon, lol.

This photo was taken roughly a week later. It's really going much faster in this size and it turns out more even.

By now I'm about 80% done, I'd say.
